Strangely, Secret World Live wasn't remastered along with the rest of Peter Gabriel’s catalog in 2002, though this performance was issued on album and on video (with two alterations). Paula Cole handles Sinead O’Connor’s vocal parts on “Come Talk to Me” and “Blood of Eden,” plus Youssou N’Dour’s parts for “Shaking the Tree” and Kate Bush’s parts on “Don’t Give Up.” The band is high caliber, bringing together drummer Manu Katche on drums, Tony Levin on Chapman Stick, bass, and vocals, David Rhodes on guitar and vocals, Jean-Claude Naimro on keyboards and vocals, Shankar on violins and vocals, Levon Minassian on Doudouk, and Daniel Lanois on dobro and electric guitar—not to mention the ranks of horns, backing singers, and extensive percussion. The album contains the best-known version of the 1982 song “Across the River,” written for the Womad (World of Music, Arts and Dance) festival the same year. Versions of “Steam,” “Shaking the Tree,” “Blood of Eden,” “Kiss That Frog,” "Digging in the Dirt," and “Secret World” were intense. As a snapshot of this point in time, it’s a rewarding look and listen.
