Playing for Change are many things, but perhaps the core is best described as a multicultured spider web, with threads reaching to far corners of the globe and weaving together musicians in the spirit of uplift and goodwill. PFC compilations bring together musicians—from street performers to classical players—to perform classic pop songs. (All record their parts on location.) They've founded a music and arts school for kids in developing countries, and they're also a touring band. (Their most popular song and video is a cover of Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me,” with an amazing wealth and range of musical talents.) There's some real star power on PFC3, and it pays off grandly; among many stellar moments are Keith Richards’ eight-minute performance with Keb Mo and various musicians from some five different continents on Richards’ own tune “Words of Wonder” and Bob Marley’s iconic “Stand Up." Taj Mahal and Toots Hibbert collaborate on the Toots & The Maytals classic “Reggae Got Soul." And Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas trekked from Mexico to Africa with Argentinian pop star Andres Calamaro and a cadre of some truly astounding Mexican musicians.
