A set of concerts from 2009 were made available to PiL fans immediately after the concerts, with this complete concert at Brixton Academy on December 21 being made for widespread consumption. After “The Rabbit Song,” a pre-recorded track of no importance, the concert begins with a strong rendition of “Public Image” where John Lydon’s voice shows signs of aching. Usually a strident, taunting vehicle, it holds a vulnerability here that’s quite endearing. It’s an interesting career retrospective and Lydon isn’t kidding when he tells the audience to settle in for a very long concert. The tracks from Second Edition and The Flowers of Romance retain their avant-garde and dub-like arrangements with the more pop-oriented material receiving a full band performance that’s more powerful than the studio albums. Multi-instrumentalist Lu Edmonds of the Damned is back and joined by drummer Bruce Smith, who spent much of the late ‘80s with the group and new keyboardist Scott Firth, who has played with John Martyn, Elvis Costello and the Spice Girls. These songs still sound like challenges to the status quo.
