Such is the strength of young Canadian singer/songwriter Ron Sexsmith's work that he already enjoyed one of the greatest compliments a musician could ever dream of: having his work praised by some of the same veteran artists (including Elvis Costello and Paul McCartney) who initially influenced him. But while his 2001 release Blue Boy seemed overwhelmed by too-familiar folk-flavored ruminations on soured romance, he addresses that problem immediately here on the loping rhythms of "Former Glory" and the noisy, hypnotic electro-rhythms of "These Days." "HeartsDesire" floats on an even cooler pop breeze, while the lovely ballad "The Less I Know" shows Sexsmith's affection for McCartney to be genuine and smart.
