Royal Trux released their untitled third album in 1992, doing away with their avant noise-rock and writing more memorable songs with verses and choruses. The arrangements were still unrefined and sloppy, but there’s no denying the knack for melody displayed here. Neil Hagerty and Jennifer Herrema’s chemistry as singers was also solidifying as evidenced in the opening “Air” where their teetering harmonies intertwine and disengage with a complicated beauty. The acoustic-based “Junkie Nurse” explores some more of this ragged glory while other tunes jangle, stop-and-start and explode at any given moment. The minimal Stones groove of “Sometimes” is one of their finest moments while “Sun On the Run” closes with a disturbingly sexy rock ‘n’ roll sleaze.
