In recent years it hasn't been uncommon to see Rudy Royston holding down the drum chair around New York City. Whether he's playing with Bill Frisell, Ben Allison, J.D. Allen, Dave Douglas, or others, he brings a steady beat that always serves the music. On his debut album, Royston writes imaginative postbop tunes filled with surprising turns and lingering melodies. Using a seven-piece band with two bassists, Royston pushes the music from behind the kit—particularly on “Gangs of New York,” where his drumming builds the song’s ferocious intensity as Nir Felder grinds away on guitar. He emphatically makes a point of his versatility; the only covers here are a chamber music-like version of Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus” and a surging take on Radiohead’s “High and Dry,” which has another fine solo from Felder and shimmering harmonies from pianist Sam Harris. The real revelation, however, is the airy and delicate work of his originals, with standouts like “303” and a peppy “Play on Words” that offer perfect blend for the head and the heart.
