Rufus Wainwright's relationship with his father may be difficult, but "Jericho" meets his old man halfway. It's a tune that, while adventurous, eventually steers back to a melody as accessible and straightforward as the elder Wainwright's modern folk tunes. Pop producer Mark Ronson and backing band The Dap-Kings help Wainwright focus on the songs without wandering too far afield, featuring moments of funky Eurodisco mixed with quieter, more modest moments. Life has changed dramatically for Rufus. His mother, singer Kate McGarrigle, died in 2010. And in 2011, he and his partner became parents, along with Lorca Cohen (Leonard's daughter), the child's biological mother. "Welcome to the Ball" throws a party. "Bitter Tears" stares down the dance floor with a heavy heart that finds a way to the light. "Montauk" imagines a sweet future and the bittersweet paradoxes of life and death. The album's deluxe edition includes the bonus track "WWIII" and a half-hour behind-the-scenes look at one of the world's most ambitious and artistically vibrant singer/songwriters.
