[Edit]

The Sir Douglas Quintet’s frayed at the edges blend of rowdy Tex-Mex, deep southern soul, and liquor addled philosophizing has influenced everyone from Townes Van Zandt to Uncle Tupelo, and a whole host of latter day alt-country superstars in between. Those looking for proof of their greatness need only look to the music included on Hip-O-Select’s lovingly assembled Complete Mercury Recordings. Between 1968 and 1971 gifted Texas troubadour Doug Sahm led his ramshackle quintet through a host of albums for the Mercury/Smash label that dripped with post-flower child disillusionment and raucous musical camaraderie. Here they take a drunken ramble through British Invasion style rave-ups (“She’s About a Mover”), hardcore honky-tonk (“Be Real”) and straight-up soul (“Sixty Minutes of Your Love”) without missing a beat. The Sir Douglas Quintet has served as an inspiration to musical talents great and small, but few of their followers have been able to recapture the audacious eclecticism and homegrown country-soul exhibited on these early recordings.
