Put one of the greatest soul singers of all-time, Solomon Burke, in the studio with a legendary soul music producer, Willie Mitchell, and it’s virtually a lock that the results will be worth hearing. Mitchell died before this album’s release, but he was still in full control of his production powers. Nothing’s Impossible pulses with the smooth, airy arrangements the Memphis producer once supplied for Al Green. Horns and strings punctuate the behind-the-beat grooves and sparse guitars and background keyboards. Burke settles front and center. Whether it’s the ebullient bounce of “Everything About You” or the Anne Murray lite-FM chestnut “You Needed Me,” Burke brings his full emotive range to the microphone. Of course, the finest moments are when both producer and singer use each other to bring out their best. The plush ballad “Dreams,” the strutting mellow power of the title track, the retro-orchestration of “Say You Love Me Too” create an album that sounds like a missing classic from soul music’s vibrant early-‘70s era.
