Not long after wowing fans with a proper debut LP in 2009 (Tomorrow Is Alright), Sonny (Smith) & The Sunsets follow up with the bright and effervescent Hit After Hit. More than appropriately titled, the tunes here pay homage to the days of vintage hit radio, with The Sunsets’ stripped-down, easy sound boosted with plenty of reverb and layers of classic organs, muted toms, and jangly percussion. Smith’s friendly, earnest voice serves up irresistible hooks. “She Plays Yo Yo with My Mind” is a quintessential Sunsets moment, building on a Duane Eddy–like guitar foundation with classic ‘60s organ riffs, steady popping bass, and sharp, sticky percussion: it feels both old and new. There’s a hint of Buddy Holly in the ringing guitars of “Reflections on Youth,” a whiff of Mickey & Sylvia’s “Love Is Strange” on “I Wanna Do It,” and a nod to Merseybeat on “Pretend You Love Me.” The hilariously titled “The Bad Energy from L.A. Is Killing Me” has a fantastic, chugging Velvets groove, and the swaggering guitars on “Acres of Lust” and “Teenage Thugs” recall many a ‘60s Nuggets-style garage band. Rock ’n’ roll doesn’t get more fun than this.
