The best bands often zig when zagging is the current fashion, and when New York City's Soul Coughing released its musically sophisticated 1994 debut album at the height of the grunge boom, it quickly earned a sizable cult following of hipsters disaffected by pop hype. Mainstay M. Doughty's heady cocktail of beat poetry, bop influences, and hip-hop rhythms (he once dubbed it "deep slackerjazz") seems further removed from the Seattle sensibility than by a mere continent, as evidenced by the spare, cinematic cool of "True Dreams of Wichita," "Janine," and "Screenwriter Blues." Yet Doughty is also playful enough to mash himself between samples of The Andrews Sisters and Howlin' Wolf on "Down to This," a hip-hop–bred sensibility that finds everyday sounds transformed (courtesy of Mark de Gli Antoni) into the unlikeliest of rhythm and percussion devices throughout.
