With its 1989 major-label debut, Soundgarden entered the big leagues. Having already twisted the underground music scene with its Led Zeppelin–esque riffs and sludgy Sabbath/Mountain/Blue Cheer attack, the band was ready to take on the mainstream. The songwriting here isn't quite up to the near-flawless standards of Badmotorfinger or Superunknown, but singer Chris Cornell and guitarist Kim Thayil are locked in tight. They mock the glam metal of the day with "Big Dumb Sex," firing off the warning shots that nerf-metal's days were numbered, and explore a touch of psychedelia on "Ugly Truth." "Full on Kevin's Mom" sports a punkish edge and sense of fun that isn't always apparent in Soundgarden's music. "Get on the Snake" even slides into a Rocks-era Aerosmith groove. It'd be a few years before Nirvana turned the world's attention toward Seattle, but Soundgarden was paving the way with loud, uncompromising hard rock that just a few years earlier would've been thought dead on arrival, commercially speaking.
