Each Southern Culture On the Skids album delivers a solid punch in the gut. Much has been said about the band’s brilliant take on white-trash trailer-park culture, but no matter how spot-on and loving the parody, it’s the music that ensures many happy returns. The productions always keep things crunchy and the variety of songwriting allows the band to spice things up with anything from a straightforward pop tune (“Highlife”) to a two-step shuffle ripe for a barn raising (“Pig Pickin’). The mock country of “My Neighbor Burns Trash” turns the old classic corn-pone Hee-Haw country music TV program into the modern century. “Jack’s Tune” is most touching, as the guitar sings along with the most simple and powerful backing available. “Come As You Are / Lucifer Sam” twists Nirvana into Pink Floyd without missing a beat. “Bad Boys” clangs with the rumble of classic ‘60s garage rock. SCOTS manage to turn retro into modern times without changing a thing. Sometimes, it’s all a matter of how you look at things.
