The second album by post-rock pioneers Stereolab continues to employ the blend of indie rock, postpunk, Krautrock (specifically the Neu!/Kraftwerk variety), and Velvet Underground–derived avant-rock minimalism that had emerged from their 1992 full-length debut, Peng!. But a number of new elements are introduced into the mix, offering hints of the signature Stereolab sound that was still to come. Amid the chugging grooves filled with overdriven organ and fuzzed-out guitar (with Laetitia Sadier's contrastingly serene voice floating overhead), we can hear dashes of both abstract experimentalism and the vintage Muzak influence that would soon become central to the Stereolab sound.
