If Other Planes of There is the start of a classic era in Sun Ra’s discography, 1965’s The Magic City finds the band continuing their upward trajectory into the cosmos. While the bandleader maintained that he didn’t believe in open concepts of free jazz, this certainly fits the bill, with him directing the music from the keyboard by using hand gestures. The sprawling opening piece finds the leader manipulating an electric Clavoline at the opening and closing segments, but the music grows in density and intensity as all the well-rehearsed players join in. “The Shadow World” has the same energy but is more organic, with Ra on marimba, bassist Ronnie Boykins, drummer Jimhmi Johnson, Pat Patrick on tympani, and a horn section that punctuates like a Greek chorus. The two brief final pieces are more pastiche, but only because of the magnitude of the first two. This is also remastered from original source tapes using 24-bit transfer; the quality of the original recordings were problematic and partially in mono. The result is a definitive Sun Ra recording now that sounds much better.
