One of three Sun Ra albums from his Chicago era, Jazz in Silhouette was recorded and released in 1959 and effectively closes out Sunny’s more conventional bop and swing era in classic fashion before his interstellar travel in the ‘60s. He’s well supported here with longtime saxophonists Marshall Allen (alto), John Gilmore (tenor), and Pat Patrick (baritone) being three of the 10 players featured. The loping classic “Enlightenment” makes its recording debut before becoming a live staple. Elsewhere, the bandleader tips his hat to Mary Lou Williams (who was a big influence) and her “Zodiac Suite” on the tightly scripted “Horoscope,” leans toward exotica on “Ancient Aiethopia,” and does brassy big band swing on “Hours After.” The band is well-featured on tunes like “Saturn,” “Velvet,” “Horoscope,” “Images (In a Mirror),” and particularly the driving “Blues at Midnight.” With some material here in stereo (when possible) and other cuts in mono, this is all newly remastered from source tapes to create 24-bit transfers with unprecedented fidelity as part of Sun Ra’s 100th birthday celebration.
