Tangerine Dream's third album, Zeit (German for "time"), is a perfect moment unto itself within the band's esteemed early discography. The post-psychedelic Krautrock that colored its predecessors had completely receded, but the more melodic, sequencer-based sounds that the group would become famous for hadn't yet arrived. Instead, this double album contains four extended ambient excursions on which the classic lineup of Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke, and Peter Baumann (assisted by guests like Popol Vuh's Florian Fricke) employ all manner of analog electronics (as well as organ, guitar, etc.) for what feels like the soundtrack to a space mission. But these aren't fluffy, dreamy, lighter-than-air sounds; the textures T. Dream create here are full of a quiet moodiness that would come to influence a whole school of electronic musicians, like Robert Rich and Pete Namlook. Even the generous amounts of space between the tones feel loaded with portent. Neither blissful background music nor minimalist drone, Zeit simply invents its own way of organizing sound.
