With their acoustic guitars, big haircuts and anthemic calls to arms, the Alarm, from North Wales intended to be the next important rock band for the ‘80s. By the time they landed their recording contract after years of struggle, the Clash had fallen apart and U2 was on their way to assuming the mantle. But there is every bit the passion for uniting the masses in Alarm statements of purpose such as “Marching On,” “Where Were You Hiding When the Storm Broke?,” “Sixty Eight Guns” and “Blaze of Glory.” “The Stand (Prophecy)” is a brief tease of their early hit single and not the full version. This collection features the band’s debut album as well as a number of outtakes that give a fuller picture of what they were accomplishing during those early years, including covers of “Bells of Rhymney” and “Bound for Glory,” which further established their links to the folk-protest tradition, and the single version of “Absolute Reality,” the centerpiece of their next album, Strength.
