Capitol Records wanted a new Beach Boys album for the 1965 Christmas season, although the group had already released a holiday album and a live set the previous year. Considering that Brian Wilson was working on the intricate masterpiece Pet Sounds, the band agreed to quickly hit the studio with a handful of rehearsed covers and create a party-like atmosphere by overdubbing festive chatter, laughter, and silly little asides to songs recorded with acoustic instruments (and electric bass). It was a novel idea, made all the more incredible considering what Wilson was really up to. The Beatles are covered three times, with "I Should Have Known Better," "Tell Me Why," and "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," featuring a sensitive Dennis Wilson vocal. The only Beach Boys originals are done as a loose medley: "I Get Around"/"Little Deuce Coupe." The Rivingtons' "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" (previously heard on Concert) is raucous. The Everly Brothers' "Devoted to You" is sweet and sincere. A cover of The Regents' "Barbara Ann" became a massive hit, with Brian Wilson and Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean on lead vocals.
