Molten Lager is an excellent live album of the '90s version of The Damned, which made the album Not of This Earth, a.k.a. I'm Alright Jack & The Beanstalk. Featuring singer Dave Vanian and drummer Rat Scabies along with The Godfathers' Kris Dollimore and Alan Lee Shaw on guitars and New Model Army's Jason "Moose" Harris on bass, this June 1994 concert in Mulhouse, France, features great, tight sound and nine songs from The Damned's most recent album at the time; the tracks sound even better here than in their studio versions. The opening four tracks form what feels like The Damned, Mach II, with "Testify," "Shut It," "Shadow to Fall," and "I Need a Life" forming an unstoppable steamrolling of sound until drummer Scabies seems to wander off for a bathroom break and the remaining members entertain the crowd with an impromptu cover of Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line." They continue into "Running Man" before kicking around a line from Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska" and a silly half-take of The Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'." The final batch features vicious takes on the old Damned classics "Love Song" and "Neat Neat Neat," plus a few obscurities.
