After Dirty Heads’ acoustic venture (2013’s Home Phantoms of Summer) showed the SoCal band capable of more than their sizable hip-hop/reggae/rock hybrid skills, Sound of Change is a collection that dabbles in grand, mature rock (ala Radiohead, Arcade Fire) that is, surprisingly, right at home with the sounds that have brought Dirty Heads such success. While a tune like the buzzing, stomping rap number “Medusa” (with Jamaican dancehall outfit Ward 21) or the blissed-out, dubby “Radio” seem natural mates to the breezy, reggae-tinged pop of tracks like “My Sweet Summer,” the foray into billowing, dramatic rock is an exciting development. The title track opens the collection with an impressively grand waltz of big guitars -- soaring above acoustic ones – glimmering keyboards, booming kick drums, and a hooky melody that doesn’t wash away, even after the harsh imagery and rapid-fire rap of “Franco Eyed” or “Silence.” Other orchestral rock-inspired numbers – like “Dark Days” and “One Hand” – make fine bridges between the album’s plentiful, thoughtfully planned range of styles.
