Overflowing with a whopping 56 songs from Australia-based ‘60s mod band the Easybeats, The Definitive Anthology makes good on its title, save for some jingles they recorded for Coca-Cola®. Sequenced non-chronologically, the psychedelic “Friday On My Mind” opens with a plodding guitar trill as frontman Stevie Wright comes in singing like a young Roger Daltrey. The tune was poised to be a hit, but back in 1967 American radio stations banned the song for containing references to the afterlife, while the lyrics “Hell is finding someone else in your bed” kept it off the BBC. The following “Good Times” rocks with the unmistakably soulful rasp of the Small Faces’ Steve Marriott making a guest appearance in the catchy choruses. If the Merseybeat-inspired “Pretty Girl” sounds more British than Australian, that’s because Stevie Wright and drummer Gordon Henry Fleet were both from England. The second half of the anthology gathers more of the band’s British Invasion-sounding songs like the mod dance-club favorite “Sorry” (which was covered by the Three O’ Clock in 1982) and the poppy “Amanda Storey.”
