Blessed with a lead singer, James "Shep" Sheppard, who was actually pretty good at writing doo wop ballads, the Heartbeats had several chart hits in the mid-'50s, including the big hit "A Thousand Miles Away" in 1956. The Queens, NY-based quintet had some uptempo material but really excelled at the slow-burning doo wop ballad, and that just happened to be the strength of Sheppard's songwriting, and with his strong and smooth tenor vocals, he knew just how to sing them — songs like "Crazy for You," "Darling How Long," and "A Thousand Miles Away" are classics by any standard. This set has the above three songs plus another doo wop gem, "500 Miles to Go," and a whole lot of secondary tracks that aren't quite as essential, but it pretty much tells the whole story of this impressive vocal group. Sheppard moved on to form Shep & the Limelites in 1961, a group built on the Heartbeats template.
