The House of Love was one of Britain's finest pop-rock bands at the end of the '80s, before Madchester and the grunge scene altered the definition of alternative music. The group's inability to connect with a wide audience in the U.S. was made even more difficult by acrimony within the group. But in retrospect, albums like this self-titled debut, plus the other self-titled album (often known as "The Butterfly Album" for its cover) and even the other self-titled collection of early singles (known as "The German Album") are packed with passionate playing and smart, emotive songwriting that bring out the best in singer Guy Chadwick. "Christine" is one of the group's more popular tunes, and it captures the zoning aura of The Jesus and Mary Chain in its constant tonal assault. "Hope" starts with a placid intro before finding its own desperate charge. "Love in a Car" swerves in from outer space and lands in the heart of a gorgeous hook. "Man to Child" elicits memories of The Smiths, with guitars that jangle like Johnny Marr and a melody that captures that twilight feeling.
