Dubbed "the U2 that never were" by the British press, The House of Love suffered from personnel problems and label politics that kept it from connecting with a wide enough audience to ensure a durable career. Instead, its fabulous music is left to be discovered by the sort of U.S. music fans who love to find gems among the acts that never translated to American audiences. The group was a favorite of influential British DJ John Peel and performed on his radio show numerous times. In the U.K., The House of Love was respected, but it should've been even bigger with such instantly lovable tunes as "Christine," "Hedonist," "Beatles and Stones," and the lush and exciting "Love in a Car." Several of its key songs are absent here, but the band's catalog was deep. While it was tough to lose guitarist Terry Bickers (who left before the second album), the band still turns out superior performances on the later sessions, as "Cruel" and "Crush Me" make clear.
