In 1996, the Cherry Red label released Compendium: A History, 1979-1995, a 22-track overview that covered most of the Monochrome Set's discography, from their first singles for Rough Trade through their time spent on Cherry Red. Only four years later, Cherry Red released the same set of songs again, only with a different (and more definitive) title and relatively bland packaging. Though there is plenty of overlap between these two releases and the other compilations that have surfaced, Compendium and The Best of the Monochrome Set are preferable, as they are the most straightforward of the available options.
