Though they couldn’t boast the raw talent of contemporary Los Angeles rock outfits like Love, The Doors, or The Byrds, the four disreputable-looking longhairs known as The Seeds outpaced them all for sheer attitude. The Seeds' first two singles, “Can’t Seem to Make You Mine” and “Pushin’ Too Hard,” were brilliantly simple songs whose already-considerable angst quotient was upped immeasurably by singer Sky Saxon. He didn’t so much sing as spit out his lyrics in a brattish, insectoid whine. The indignant, accusatory stance of songs like “Nobody Spoil My Fun” and “Evil Hoodoo” anticipated punk's revolutionary anger by at least a decade and ideally complements The Seeds’ rudimentary but brutally effective music. This collection compiles the entirety of The Seeds’ first two albums, with the exception of the Diddley-ish “Lose Your Mind" from The Seeds’ 1966 debut. Though the absence of that track might irritate completists, this collection nonetheless is an effective summation of early career of one of Los Angeles’ greatest garage rock groups.
