Although It Goes Like This is Thomas Rhett’s debut album, the Georgia native is no stranger to the country charts. He’s cowritten No. 1 singles for Jason Aldean ("1994"), Lee Brice ("Parking Lot Party"), and Florida Georgia Line (“Round Here”). Those tunes—with huge hooks, blazing guitars, and a playful bad-boy spirit—are a fitting preview of the kind of songs that fill Rhett's debut. Opening with the clever one-two punch of “Whatcha Got in That Cup” and “Something to Do with My Hands,” Rhett turns out hard-partying singles with lots of coy wordplay and amps-on-11 rock edge. Rhett cowrote many of the album’s tracks with his father, country star Rhett Atkins. And though the young songwriter clearly loves backyard keggers, clever pickup lines, and wild nights, the songs that take it down a notch—like the confessional title track or the closing “Beer with Jesus”—have a surprising amount of emotional depth.
