The Best of Timi Yuro is an installment in the excellent but largely deleted EMI Legends of Rock n' Roll Series, gathering 24 of Yuro's recordings for Liberty from 1961-1964 and one from a brief return to the label in 1968. Yuro's recordings are similar to Brenda Lee's in terms of material and production style, but Yuro's voice is deeper and more soulful. Many consider Yuro one of the greatest white soul singers, and according to her, she was implored by a producer at one point to "cut white" — or, in other words, to make some white-sounding records. "Hurt," a Top Five pop hit in 1961, was Yuro's biggest success, but she charted nearly a dozen singles while on Liberty. The Best of Timi Yuro includes all of her Top 100 singles, with the exception of Yuro's minor hit version of "Gotta Travel On" — a curious omission considering the depth of the anthology.
