A masterpiece in miniature, Vashti Bunyan’s Just Another Diamond Day is a set of near perfect songs. Released to little fanfare in 1970, Bunyan’s first full-length effort went on to become a sort of Holy Grail amongst record collectors, an album that was talked about more than it was heard. Thanks to the attentive folks at Seattle’s Light In The Attic records Just Another Diamond Day received its first stateside release in 2004 and found a receptive and enthusiastic audience amongst a new generation of listeners. Vashti’s tightly composed songs, none of them exceeding three minutes in length, are possessed of a striking lyrical economy and a sense of pastoral stillness and that is only bolstered by producer Joe Boyd’s highly textured production. On Just Another Diamond Day Boyd opts for subtle flute and vibraphone flourishes that highlight the fragile beauty of Bunyan’s vocals. Though many contemporary artists claim to be influenced by Bunyan’s work, few have managed to produce anything approaching the singular perfection of Just Another Diamond Day.
