Steve Jobs had unveiled the first iPhone\u00a0to the world on 9th January, 2007. Then what’s it doing in a painting from 350 years ago?<\/span><\/p>\n

“I always thought I knew when the iPhone was invented, but now I\u2019m not so sure anymore,” Apple CEO Tim Cook joked<\/span> <\/a>at a conference last year, while displaying the painting in question. The painting was painted by\u00a0Pieter de Hooch in the 1650s, and\u00a0showed a typical Dutch home. Yet the woman on the right is holding up what unmistakably looks to be an iPhone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cook’s unveiling of the painting last year has set off a bit of a trend. Earlier this year, the internet was once again obsessing<\/span> <\/a>over a painting called ”Mr Pynchon and the Settling of Springfield’ by Umberto Romano. Painted in 1937, it represented the European conquest of the Americas from 400 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet amidst all the carnage, there’s a native American man who very clearly seems to be taking a selfie.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the internet is again abuzz after the discovery of yet another iPhone. “The Expected One,\u201d a painting by Austrian painter Ferdinand Georg Waldm\u00fcller from 1860 shows what could be nothing but a girl engrossed in her cellphone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Time travel? Aliens?\u00a0A sign that Apple is divinely ordained to become the most valuable company of all time? Sadly, the answer might be a lot less exciting. Experts say that that the girl in the first painting is not holding the latest iPhone, but a mere letter. In the third painting, the girl is supposedly holding a prayer book.\u00a0\u201cThe big change is that in 1850 or 1860, every single viewer would have identified the item that the girl is absorbed in as a hymnal or prayer book,\u201d an expert told<\/span> <\/a>Motherboard. \u201cToday, no one could fail to see the resemblance to the scene of a teenage girl absorbed in social media on their smartphone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But it’s not just iPhones that have popped up at unexpected places in history.\u00a0This painting<\/span> <\/a>from ancient Greece seems to show an ancient Grecian chilling with his laptop. He’s even got a stylus for good measure.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the ”Grave Naiskos of an Enthroned Woman with an Attendant,” a statue from 100 BC, shows an ancient Grecian woman checking out what could be the latest Homerian blockbuster on her laptop. That’s what conspiracy theorists say anyway — historians go with the significantly less interesting explanation that the woman is\u00a0‘touching the lid of a shallow chest’.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can see why these conspiracy theories persist though — the last one even has USB ports.<\/span><\/p>\n
