There has been a leadership shakeup at OpenAI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a memo sent to her team in the AGI Deployment org, Fidji Simo \u2014 OpenAI’s CEO of Applications \u2014 announced she would be taking medical leave for the next several weeks, while simultaneously revealing that COO Brad Lightcap is transitioning out of his operating role and into a special projects position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brad Lightcap Steps Back From COO Role<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lightcap, who had served as OpenAI’s go-to executive for complex deals and investments, will now focus on special projects \u2014 including OpenAI’s DeployCo effort \u2014 and will report to Sam Altman directly. Lightcap had been a visible face of OpenAI’s commercial ambitions<\/a>, speaking publicly about the company’s hardware ambitions and brokering enterprise deals across the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stepping into his role is Denise Dresser, a seasoned enterprise executive with decades of experience including several senior positions at Salesforce and, most recently, as CEO of Slack. Denise will report directly to Simo and will take over Brad’s full commercial scope, with the exception of government and OpenAI for Countries work, which moves to the Strategy org.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simo’s Medical Leave \u2014 And A Second Departure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The memo’s most personal disclosure was Simo’s own health update. She revealed she had experienced a relapse of a neuroimmune condition shortly before joining OpenAI, and that the past month had been “particularly rough health-wise.” Having postponed medical tests and new therapies to remain fully focused on her job, she said recent test results made clear she had “pushed a little too far” and needed to try new interventions to stabilize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The timing, she acknowledged, was frustrating \u2014 OpenAI is in the middle of what she described as an exciting roadmap. During her absence, Greg will handle product, while Jason, Sarah, and Denise will manage the business side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simo’s memo also disclosed that CMO Kate has stepped down to focus on her cancer recovery, with plans to return in a different, more narrowly scoped role when her health allows. Gary will lead Marketing in the interim, reporting to Jason, while the search for a new CMO gets underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
